No, not the name of a Cambodian variety act but an idea of what I’ve been up to for the last couple of days. Khampot is a pretty sleepy kind of town where everything is about shut by 10pm. Last night I got back to my guesthouse at 10.20, the gates and doors were locked and the watchman were asleep. I had to ring the bell to wake them up and let me in!
Yesterday I took a tuk-tuk through the countryside to the even smaller seaside town of Kep. Kep is famouse for it’s seafood so yesterday it was a plate of grilled crab for lunch. Acutally I was presented with 4 crabs and they were pretty good if a bit messy to eat. Cost was $10! After that it was off to sleep in a hammock for an hour or so before I had a bit of look round.
Kep was weekemd haunt of wealthy Cambodians pre- Khmer Rouge and the KR decided to wreck the place when they came to power. As a result there are wrecked, roofless villas dotted around the place, some with squatters in them, some being renovated, all with bullet holes in the walls. New places are being built though and Kep is definitely on the way up. Come and visit it while you can before it changes for ever.
It’s off to the big city of Phnom Pen tomorrow and I guess I’ll have to change the pace of life up a couple of gears.
PS – No chickens were hurt in the making of the trip to Kep – this one just decided to wake me up by pecking my feet when I was in the hammock!
